Under transmission towers and high-tension voltage cables, the salt-encrusted mudflats of Al Ruwais develop over decades. Exploring these landscapes, the UAE's exhibit at the 17th Venice Biennale examines the architectural potential of salt. By developing a concrete which substitutes lime with waste brine from the country's desalination plants, a series of interlocking organic forms are cast and stand at the center of the pavilion. This use of salt reframes regional materiality, suggesting it offers more than the replication of tradition and prompts investigations into its technological potentials
