It takes six months for craftsmen, hunched over, carving large pieces of plaster and inserting shards of colored glass, to create one of the Qamariyah windows lining the walls of Aqsa Mosque. It takes one day for Israeli soldiers to put bullets through them. In her Qamariyah, Srouji composes the pieces of glass to create a layered palimpsest which represents the geography of al Aqsa, the bullet holes in its walls, and the permanence of palestinian resistance.
