Five years before its debut as an art exhibit, the Kalba Ice Factory was one of six abandoned structures from the 70s and 80s acquired by the Sharjah Art Foundation in 2015. These purchases were more than a simple conservation project. They were reactions to the “Heart of Sharjah” project which aimed to restore and recreate Sharjah’s architectural heritage of the 50s (and earlier) at the cost of leveling buildings from the 70s & 80s.
كان مصنع الثلج في كلباء (قبل افتتاحه كمعرض فني بخمس سنوات) أحد ستة مبانٍ مهجورة من السبعينات والثمانينات ، ومن ثم استحوذت عليها مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون في عام 2015. لم تكن هذه المبادرة مجرد مشروع للحفاظ على التراث وصناعة أماكن حضارية جديدة، بل كانت ردة فعل لمشروع "قلب الشارقة" الذي كان سيدمر عدد كبير من مباني السبعينات لهدف استعادة تراث الشارقة المعماري من ما قبل الخمسينات.
